About Programme:
The first section of the concert is based on the compositions interconnecting Jewish poetry and tunes with Slavic musical culture.
Biblical psalms that form the worldview of a man of faith have played a special role in the formation of the impressional side of Russian and Bulgarian oeuvre. The State Choir will present three Slavic outlooks on the songs of King David: the solemn Psalm 100 by Ivan Protopopov for the coronation of Catherine the Great, the wife of Peter the Great; the lyric “Praise the Name of the Lord” (Psalms 134 and 135) by Bulgarian romantic composer Dobri Hristov; and dynamic and very Russian in its spirit “Vzyde Bog” (Psalm 46) by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
“Three Jewish Romances” is a visible evidence of mutually enriching fraternal dialogue of our cultures expressed in compositions of Russian composers of different epochs and styles. Russian symphonist Nikolai Myaskovsky created the romance “Conversation” on the poem by poet Leib (Lion) Kvitko, subsequently a political prisoner in the late thirties of the twentieth century. The poem resembling a parable of a biblical sage claims the belief in the purity of the human soul created in the name of the good. The tragic Vocalise by Yuri Shaporin is an adaptation of a folk song performed by the outstanding actor Solomon Mikhoels. The composition is dedicated to the memory of the victims of Nazism. The first classic of Russian music Mikhail Glinka becomes a prophet in his “Hebrew Romance” (1840), foreshadowing the return of the Jewish people “to old home, to Palestine!”
Three choruses by Modest Mussorgsky are dedicated to both ancient and biblical times. Jewish liturgical tunes recorded by the composer himself are incorporated in the composition.
Here you will hear one of the most famous fragments of the opera “Nero” by Anton Rubinstein, the maestro equally belonging to Jewish, Russian, and European cultures, the person who laid foundation of the unique Russian musical education, as well as one of the earliest masterpieces by Sergei Rachmaninov, the cantata “Spring” on the poem by Nikolai Nekrasov depicturing the vernal awakening of nature that releases the human soul from evil and darkness.
The pearls of Russian and foreign music, classical and modern adaptations of Russian folk songs are performed in the second section.
