The Artistic Director of the Choir – Evgeny Volkov.
Evgeny Volkov was born in Moscow in 1975. In 1995 he graduated the theoretical department of the Academic College of Music of the Moscow State Conservatory, in 2000 – choral conducting department of the Moscow State Conservatory, in 2002 – postgraduate study at Conservatory (the class of choral conducting of the People’s Artist of Russia, Professor Boris Tevlin; for opera and symphony conducting studied in class of Professor Igor Dronov). He participated in master classes of professors Erik Erikson (Moscow, 2001), Hertha Frischmuth and Gabor Hollerung (Wernigerode (Germany), 2003).
He began teaching in 2000 at the Moscow Conservatory. In 2010 – at the Department of choral conducting, since 2010 – at the Department of Contemporary choral performing arts; since 2009 – as an associate professor.
Choirmaster activity carries since 1995 (a few number of training choirs, working with diverse programs and programs in different styles). In 2002 – Gold medal award for best performance of the compulsory work, Special Prize of the International Association INTERKULTUR for the best conductor’s work at the International Choir Festival “Moscow Sounds”.
He works very successfuly with professional choirs since 2000 (concerts and archival recordings with the choir of Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, Radio and Television Choir of Wernigerode (Germany), the State Choir of the Republic of Bashkortostan).
In 2006 Evgeny Volkov took 3rd place in the All-Russia competition of choral conductors in Salavat (Bashkortostan). In 2008 he prepared and performed a program of works by Slavic composers with mixed choir Song and Dance Ensemble of the PLA of China (Beijing).
From 2008 to 2010 Evgeny Volkov is a chief choirmaster of chamber choir Musica Viva at the Academic Chamber Orchestra (artistic director Alexander Rudin).
He was a member of the Chamber Choir under the direction of Maestro Boris Tevlin since its inception (1995). Since 2000 – he is a leading choirmaster of choir, from 2008 to 2012 – chief choirmaster. He took an active part in all projects, concerts and recordings as a team mate and closest disciple of Maestro.
He was appointed as choirmaster of the Sveshnikov State Academic Russian Choir at the invitation of the Master in 2008; since 2011 – the chief choirmaster of the collective.
Since August 2012 Evgeny Volkov is artistic director of the Sveshnikov State Academic Russian Choir. Under his leadership the collective has prepared a series of colorful diverse programs, including a number of Russian and world premieres of classical and contemporaries composers.
In addition to performing and teaching musician conducts active research in the field of theory, ideology and philosophy of choral art, musicology, history of Russian culture. He is a Member of the Presidium of the All-Russia Choral Society (from 2013).
As co-writer and music director of the program “The citizens of Leningrad. 900 days in the name of life” was awarded the gratitude from the Governor of St. Petersburg (2014).
Evgeny Volkov is an Author of scientific articles, essays, creative portraits, scripts, reviews, works of fiction.
In 2016 he was awarded the gratitude from the Minister of Culture of Russian Federation.
Principal Choirmaster – Alexander Toplov
Alexander Toplov was born in Moscow in 1977. In 1996 he graduated from the choral conducting department of the Gnesins state musical college (class of S.Borodin). In 2001 he graduated the choral conducting faculty of the Moscow Conservatory (class of Boris Tevlin), and in 2004 – postgraduate studies in the field of “choral conducting” (director – Boris Tevlin) and “the art of music”.
In 2001-2002 he worked as head of the musical part of the “Sovremennik” Moscow theater; at the same time he started to work as a choirmaster at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Musical Theater. During his work in the theater with his participation were staged performances: “Faust” by Gounod, “Madame Butterfly” and “Tosca” by Puccini, “The Golden Cockerel” and “May Night” by Rimsky-Korsakov, “La Traviata” and “The Force of destiny” Verdi, “Carmen” by Bizet, “Moscow-Cheryomushki” Shostakovich, “Eugene Onegin” by Tchaikovsky, “The Magic flute” by Mozart, “Demon” by Rubinstein and others. He took part in all of opera productions, as well as work on the concert programs of the choir. Since 2012 – in the conductor’s board of theater (condacted the opera “Blind” by Lera Auerbach).
In April 2005, on the base of State Specialized Institute of Arts Alexander Toplov staged opera “The Wild Swans” by Svetlana Fomina, he acted there as the music director and conductor.
The Winner of the All-Russian Competition (2011).
In the Moscow Conservatory Alexander Toplov works since 1997 (from 1997 to 2000 – Inspector of the choir), as a teacher – from 2003. In 2003-2004 he worked as a consultant in the class L.Ermakova, since 2004 taught reading choral scores in the choral conducting department, since 2011 he is a senior lecturer in contemporary choral performing art department. In the same year he leads a class of conducting.
Actively performed and toured as a pianist.
From 1982 to 2000 he was engaged in ballroom dancing, he is candidate for master of sports. From 2001 to 2009 he taught ballroom dancing in the Gnesin Music College.
In the period 2005-2013 implemented a number of concert tours in Germany as a pianist and choirmaster (Bremen, Berlin, Bonn, Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, Hannover), where he also was lecturing to students and was sharing his experience with teachers at the Faculty of Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Education at the University of Bremen, conducted a masterclass with the choir of Bremen University and the Catholic youth Choir “Jingle”.
Engage in scientific work, he explores the psychological problems of contact between the conductor and the choir, makes a speech at conferences.
Since 2013 – Akexander Toplov is a chief choirmaster the Sveshnikov State Russian Choir.
In 2014-2015 – Chief choirmaster concert projects: “The great masterpieces of music” (Moscow International House, conductor – Luciano Akochella); “Hero of Our Time” (historical scene of Bolshoi Theatre, conductor Alexander Titov); “To Victory” (Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, conductor – Alexander Titov).
In November 2015 he produced an anthology of choral music of composer Alexander Zhurbin and he conducted it in the Small Hall of the Moscow International House, which is also under his leadership was performed the premiere of the cantata “Pied Piper” (the Sveshnikov State Russian Choir and Orchestra «Musica viva»).
2015-2016 – Jurymen of the international competition-festival “Slavic Meetings”
Since December 2016, Alexander Toplov became a guest conductor of the Buryat Opera and Ballet Theater (Ulan-Ude), having carried out the musical preparation and staging of major renewal and ballet B.Yampilov and L.Knipper “Beautiful Angara”.
